Our Ethos

SCCC exists to enable more people to enjoy cycling in our local area. Our key aim is to broaden and sustain participation in cycling. This requires us to be welcoming, inclusive, safe and accessible. We particularly try to support new and returning riders, to enable them to enjoy our rides and enhance their cycling and health.

Our ride programme is designed to support this aim. Short easy rides provide a gentle introduction to cycling, with longer rides offering the opportunity to progress and venture further afield. All rides are carefully planned and led so that riders can be reassured that they needn’t worry about finding safe routes, being lost, getting left behind or being stranded by mechanical problems. They can be free to enjoy the ride and friendly company.

The club has a strong record of enabling and supporting riders. Since 2005, more than 1,000 people have ridden with our club. Some of them stay for only a few rides, others have dipped in and out of riding with us over the years depending on their circumstances, while many have become long term regular riders.

We welcome families and accompanied children although most of our riders are adults returning to cycling or who already enjoy riding for pleasure and fun. Our current membership is around 250. About half are active riders, equally balanced between women and men.

Engagement with our wider community has always been important for SCCC. Over the years we have enabled cycling for young people and adults, collaborating with local schools, with the NHS, Life Leisure, SMBC and Cycling UK. Our last community project, worked with CERA Cycloan and provided rides for adults facing various barriers to cycling, as part of the Transport for Greater Manchester Cycle and Stride Initiative.
